Learn to Row with Westfield Crew
We will again be offering our Summer Learn-to-Row program during Summer 2014. There will be an information session on Wednesday evening, May 28th at 7:30pm (location tba), and the LTR sessions schedule will be posted on this webpage in early May.
If you are a newcomer to the site and are interested in learning more about Westfield Crew, please feel free to contact us here. We offer a Learn-to-Row program each summer for students in grades 8-12 and successful completion is a prerequisite to joining Westfield Crew.
As a reference, here is an overview and the schedule that was completed for our 2013 Learn-to-Row (LTR) program. The 2013 Learn-to-Row (LTR) program was our largest and most successful LTR in the history of the team, with almost 40 rowers completing the program, and we expect to maintain this enthusiasm and success going forward.

This program is a prerequisite for any new rower wishing to row in Fall 2013 and/or Spring 2014 seasons.

Westfield Crew Learn-to-Row (LTR) program is open to students who are in high school or rising 8th graders. In order to row as part of the team, every new rower must complete a full LTR session. A full session consists of two land-based orientation training days and eight on-water training days. The land-based trainings take place at at Roosevelt School, 301 Clark Street Westfield, NJ, and the on-water training takes place at the Rutgers University Boatyard adjacent to Boyd Park in New Brunswick (location, directions). This makes a total of ten combined instructional days for a complete Learn-to-Row session.

Sessions fill up on a first come basis, and are a prerequisite to participate on the High School competitive rowing team. Students who are not interested in high school racing are still welcome to enroll in the Learn-to-Row program. Each student who registers must have a full commitment to all 10 training days.
Rowing is an endurance sport on the open water. Therefore, safety is our highest priority. We row in light rain, but never during thunder, lightning or unsafe water conditions. If any dates are cancelled due to weather conditions, make-up dates will be advised by the coaches. Typically make-ups will take place on one or both Friday(s) during your scheduled water session weeks. If more than two LTR dates are cancelled due to weather conditions, the coaches will arrange make-up dates.
Unfortunately due to limited seating NO make up dates are available if your athlete misses their scheduled LTR dates.
Every athlete who participates in rowing sessions on the water must pass a swim test . Swim tests must be verified and forms signed by a certified lifeguard.

When rowing, athletes should dress in comfortable, close fitting clothes. No baggy shorts or pants are allowed in the boats. No sweatshirts or tops with front pockets should be worn in the boats. All athletes should bring a large, filled reusable water bottle to LTR. The fee for LTR 2013 is $375.00 and includes 10 LTR sessions (2 land based, 8 water) must be received before your athlete may participate in land training sessions or rowing.
